Heuchera is a genus named
for Johann Heinrich von Heucher (1677 - 1747, German Professor of
Medicine). It comprises about 55 species of evergreen and semi-evergreen
perennials from woodland and rocky sites in North America. Plants
characteristically have tufts of long-stalked, rounded, cordate leaves
originating from somewhat woody root stock, and slender, mainly leafless
stems that bear narrow, loose to dense clusters of small, bell-shaped,
5-petalled flowers with saucer- to urn-shaped calyx tubes well above
the leaves. Flowers are sometimes petalless and have conspicuous,
colorful calyces. Leaves can be boldly veined, they are usually coarsely
toothed or shallowly lobed into 5-7 sections. The fruits are capsules,
6-10 mm long, with tiny, dark brown, spiny seeds.
